From our backyard tracks to you

I started hiking twenty years ago, and now I take my own kids along. I’ve learned exactly what works and what doesn't on the track, from packing the right snacks to managing tired legs and changing weather.

Practical tips for the track

Starting out at the local park or heading into the bush requires a bit of planning. Here is how you can make sure your first family walk is a good one.

Stable footwear

You don't need fancy boots for every track, but good grip is essential so you don't slip while carrying kids.

Proper layers

Wool or polyprops are best. I'll show you how to layer your kids so they stay warm even if they get wet.

Packed snacks

The right food keeps morale high. I’ll share my list of easy, portable snacks that won't get squashed in your backpack.

Pack essentials

A small first aid kit and a torch are basics I never leave home without, even on short walks near town.

KEEP IT SIMPLE AND STAY SAFE OUTSIDE

I believe getting outside shouldn't be stressful. We focus on sensible planning and steady progress, making sure you feel confident and your children stay safe while you explore together.

Notes from other mums

Her advice on what to pack actually worked. For once, we didn't have any complaints from the kids.

Sarah Miller

Jane Thompson

The gear recommendations are spot on for New Zealand conditions. No fuss, just things that work for families.

Emma Rangi

I finally felt like I could take my toddler hiking without it being a disaster. Simple and very helpful.
